Performances

Morgan Hill Haru Matsuri - On Sunday April 20th Emeryville Taiko will be making its 11th appearance at the Morgan Hill Haru Matsuri. One of the first appearances Emeryville Taiko ever made was at this festival eleven years ago, as a new taiko group in Oakland before we moved to Emeryville. This was also the first year of the festival in Morgan Hill, and ET has been a part of the festival ever since.

Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival - Another festival where we will be performing is the Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival, at which we will once again be the closing performance on Sunday, April 27th.

Both of these festivals, which include cultural exhibits and performances as well as traditional Japanese food, are free and open to the public.

Workshops
Last year Tomida-san, one of the original members of Kodo, conducted an Odaiko workshop at Emeryville Taiko which was a huge success. He will return October 9th – 20th for an extended visit of workshops and a performance hosted by Emeryville Taiko. Details will be announced as events get confirmed. Stay in touch to find out more about these opportunities to study with this dynamic taiko master.

Meet the Student: Sharon Anderson
When did you start playing taiko?
I started playing with San Francisco Taiko Dojo in January 2000. I already was part of the SFTD family, since my youngest son Jackson had been taking classes since age 8. After several years of schlepping my kid to his taiko classes & shows, I decide I could drum too. I was going through my divorce and pounding and wailing appealed to me. When Tanaka Sensei first saw me in his beginning adult class, he laughed and always referred to me as “the mom.” That’s how I got the nickname “Taiko Mom.
Why do you like taiko?
When I push myself beyond my capacity I get a “taiko high!”
How has taiko influenced your personal life?
Taiko’s a real ego buster… I developed a thicker skin and ability to be very humble!
Any favorite taiko song, performance or class moment?
In 2001, with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo we played taiko drums to “Take Five” with the Dave Brubeck Band.
What do you do with your time outside of the dojo?
As a retired social worker, I spend at least half of each day volunteering as a cancer advocate. I counsel at UCSF, coordinate a Bay Area support group, moderate 5 on-line support groups and co-founded a nonprofit foundation. I also attend medical conferences and have been collaborating with a research team at Stanford University.
What are your future taiko goals & visions?
I hope to continue to teach the Gentle Taiko class. I remember how important it was for me play taiko while I was still recovering my health. This is my “pass it forward” to help others.
